Presidente Médici International Airport – RBR
Presidente Médici International Airport is a public-military airport that served the city of Rio Branco, Brazil. The airport was the first one of its kind to handle passenger traffic from the city.It has been in operation up until 1999 but was immediately closed following the opening of Plácido de Castro International Airport. Presidente Médici International Airport was assigned the IATA code of RBR.
Best Time to Visit
The location of Presidente Médici International Airport significantly contributed to its closing. It was too close to the urban center and underwent legal disputes regarding the land’s ownership. So to avoid more conflicts, the airfield was closed right after another international airport was opened in the city. The passenger terminal and control tower of Presidente Médici International Airport still stand until today, although they both have been abandoned, and the runway was substantially demolished. Nonetheless, you can still explore the city of Rio Branco while you’re in the area.
