Kiruna: A Winter Wonderland in Northern Sweden
Dubbed as the northernmost town of the country, Kiruna is a part of Lapland province and serves as the seat of government of the municipality. The city becomes a popular tourist spot in the winter when the tourists come for snowmobiling, skiing, and ice skating, ultimately booking most of the hotels and inns in the area. When flying into Kiruna, Sweden, you can arrive at either Kiruna Airport (KRN), located about six miles from the city center. You can also try Gallivare Airport (GEV), which is found about an hour and a half south of the city.
Best Time to Visit
The winter season in Kiruna is by far the best time to visit the city, specifically during January. This is the time of year when the Polar night in the town ends and the sun shines upon the area again. The Snow Festival is also held this month, making most of Kiruna, Sweden hotels packed, if not expensive. On the other hand, for adrenaline junkies, July is a must-visit month as this is the perfect month to climb the country’s highest mountain located within the city.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Settle your gears at Hotel Bishops Arms Kiruna before visiting the Kiruna Church and Kiruna Mine. The former is just around a three-minute walk from the hotels, while the latter is about a 16-minute walk. However, for those wanting to see the Town Hall, you can check out the Best Western Hotel Arctic Eden and Scandic Ferrum. Both accommodations are within a 15-minute walk from the town hall and serve free breakfast for the guests.
