The airport was opened as a commercial airport on July 23, 1937, and was originally the Me-Tex Airport. Ownership of the airport was transferred to Lea County on November 19, 1945. HOB Hobbs is among the largest of the three airports that are owned and operated by the government of Lea County. The airport is certified by the Federal Aviation Administration as a commercial airport served by the affiliate of the United Airline with regional flights daily.
