The Hills are Alive in Yaounde, Cameroon
Stretching over 7 hills, Yaoundé is the capital city and center of government power of Cameroon. Amid an incessant traffic, the city spotlights an array of art deco, independence-era and 1970s government buildings in various lively and vivid styles. The second busiest and largest public airport in Cameroon, Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport (NSI), is located 16.8 miles south of the city and is a transit point to ecotourism sites across the country.
Best Time to Visit
Yaounde welcomes the bulk of tourist arrivals in July, which likewise happens to be the best time to visit the city for ideal weather. Months of December and May are also popular months since the national day of Cameroon falls on May 20. The 20 mai celebration starts with a military parade and later on extends to more festivities around the city. Prices for hotels and flights are more expensive during this season although you can hit some big savings if you purchase in advance.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Accessible to the city’s main business center are fine hotels like Hilton Yaounde, Djeuga Palace and Massao Palace Hotel. A visit to Yaounde should always include stopping by the Mvog-Betsi Zoo, a botanical and zoological park with its wide range of species. The stately National Museum of Yaounde displaying historical & cultural items including tribal relics is a must-go too as well as the Cameroon Art Museum (Musée d´Art Camerounais) with its impressive exhibit of traditional art such as masks, bronze and woodwork.
