Getxo: An Affluent Atlantic Town
Getxo, Spain is a highly-urbanized town located in Basque Country, specifically in the province of Biscay. It is considered to be the third-largest town in the province and is home to many well-off families. The town was a formerly rural area next to a large beach, which until now contributes to its successful tourism industry. Bilbao Airport (BIO), which has several domestic and international flights, is only less than half an hour away from the town center.
Best Time to Visit
Distinct dry and wet seasons are experienced at Getxo. It is recommended to visit the town during the first half of the year, especially during the months of May to August. These are the hottest months with more sunshine and less rain but more tourists and more expensive Getxo hotels. Every July, you can also catch the Festival Internacional de Blues de Getxo.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Playa de Azzkori is an excellent beach near Getxo that you should not miss. There is also a cute café by the shore where you can enjoy refreshing drinks. Live up to your medieval fairytale dreams as you walk along the grounds of Castle of Butron. Lastly, check out the Zubizuri Bridge, which has an interesting architecture. You will never fall short on choices when it comes to Getxo hotels and accommodations. Right in front of the beach is the posh Petit Palace Tamarises. There is also the elegant Hotel Neguri, which is very budget-friendly. Hotel Artaza is also a great choice considering there is a restaurant on-site that serves amazing local cuisine.
