Wernigerode: Truly the Pearl of the Harz
Picturesque is not a common word when used to describe Wernigerode, Germany. This medieval town, also referred to as the Pearl of the Harz, looks like it just popped out of an enchanting storybook. One look at Wernigerode and many people will understand why. Wernigerode is a town in Harz district, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is beautifully situated on the north slopes of the Harz Mountains, hence the nickname, and on the Holtemme River. The town dates as far back as 1121 but it was unknown until 1777 when Geothe visited and wrote about it. It was during the early 1900s that it became a renowned spa and vacation destination. The nearest airport is the Erfurt Airport, a 2 hour drive away from the town.

Visitors will get to explore Wernigerode under good weather when they visit during June to September, although it can get really warm during August. The coolest month to visit is during January, perfect for those who want to enjoy snow activities. July is usually avoided because it is the wettest month for the city. July is also a good month for those who want to avoid tourists and enjoy lower Wernigerode, GER hotel rates.
