El Hierro Airport – VDE El Hierro
Inaugurated in December of 1972, El Hierro Airport is the only airport on the island of El Hierro, Spain. Its airport code VDE comes from its location 5.6 miles (nine kilometers) northeast of Valverde, a municipality in the Canary Islands on the northeast section of El Hierro. Construction on the airport began in 1967 and was completed on the 11th of November in 1972.
Best Time to Visit
El Hierro Airport is primarily dedicated to national air traffic, specifically flights to and from Gran Canaria and Tenerife North. Around 1989 and 1990, a new control tower was built on the west side of the runway, with the old one being demolished, and a new passenger terminal constructed as well. In 1992, BinterCanarias’ takeover of the Tenerife-El Hierro route with their ATR-72 necessitated the extension of the runway to 3,953 feet (1,205 meters) to support an increase in passengers and operations. At present, runway 16/34 measures 4,101 feet (1,250 meters) long. Travelers can easily get to Tamaduste, Echedo, Guarazoca, Mocanal, Tesbabo, or Valverde from El Hierro Airport.
