Tirupattur: Sandal Wood Reservoir of Tamil Nadu
Tirupattur, India is a town in Tamil Nadu that is known for its fine sandal wood reservoir in the surrounding mountains. Its name literally means “a group of 10 villages or small towns”. In 1886, it was first constituted as a third grade municipality.
Best Time to Visit
With a tropical savanna climate, the perfect time to visit Tirupattur is during the months of November through February. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of June, August, and December. Tourists are least likely to visit in February. Every mid-January, the state holds Pongal, an event that celebrates the abundance of a fruitful harvest. It usually involves family gatherings and temple rituals. Another popular event in the area is Mamallapuram Dance Festival, which is usually held every December through January. It is a four-week celebration of classical and folk Indian dances.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Delhi Gate is one of the most famous attractions in the area. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the early 17th century, it is the link between the old and new Delhi. The emperor used it to go to Jama Masjid for prayer. Today, it is a maintained heritage site. Another famous nearby attraction is Vellore Fort in Vellore, a 16th-century fort known for its grand ramparts, robust masonry, and wide moat. Inside it is St. John’s Church, which was established by the Government of Madras in 1846. Don’t forget to tour the Jalagamparai Falls, and take pictures.
