Thimphu: A Traditional City Atop the Mountains
Previously spelled as Thimpu and Thimbu, Thimphu, Bhutan is the biggest city in the country and serves as Bhutan’s capital. The city also happens to be the fourth highest capital across the world in terms of altitude at it stands at an elevation of 2,248 meters. Although Thimphu’s economy primarily depends on agriculture, the town has slowly developed into a tourist spot, albeit regulated to keep the traditional vibe of the area. Best Time to Visit
In terms of weather, the ideal dates for traveling to Thimphu is between late October to mid-March. This typically coincides with the city’s celebration of Thimphu Tshechu, one of the most sought-after fests in the country, which is held every 10th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. This three-day event features traditional mask dances of religious significance and solemn prayers to the gods. The festival gathers quite a crowd, so better book your Thimphu, Bhutan hotels early.
What to Do & Area Attractions
If you’re visiting the famous site of Dechencholing Palace, you can book your suites at Shangri-La Residency and Lhaki Yangchak Residency, which are within an eight-minute drive from the palace. On the other hand, for those dropping by Bhutan National Library and Clock Tower Square, you should check out Le Méridien Thimphu, which is conveniently within a ten-minute walk from either attraction.
