Sodankyla Airfield – SOT Sodankyla
Locally known as Sodankylan Lentokentta, Sodankyla Airfield is an airfield situated 2 miles southeast of the municipal center of Sodankyla. The airport is small in standards so it can only accommodate small-size aircraft. The Municipality of Sodankyla, France, currently operates the airport. The airport or IATA Code is SOT while its ICAO code is EFSO. Currently, the airport serves as a general aviation airport. Only private aircraft and recreational flying are allowed in the area. Best Time to Visit
Established in the early 1940s, Sodankyla Airfield was built as an initial stopover for aircraft heading to Petsamo. By 1971, the runway refurbished to gravel surface type to provide better facilities to the aircraft traveling through SOT Airfield. In 1989, the runway was renovated for the second time with asphalt surface type and a terminal building was added. The airport continues to cater to regular flight schedules from 1989 until 1996. Today, the airport now serves as general aviation. Passengers that are traveling to Luosto can hire a private aircraft that has the capacity to land and takeoff from Sodankyla Airfield.
