Salamo Airport – SAM
Salamo Airport is a public-use airport found in the town of Salamo, Papua New Guinea, on the southern end of Fergusson Island, which is under the rule of the Milne Bay Province. It is internationally recognized by its International Air Transport Association (IATA) location identifier of SAM. However, unlike other airports, Salamo Airport does not have a location identifier assigned by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Best Time to Visit
The airfield resides at an elevation of 15 meters above the mean sea level. The only runway in the area, which is designated as 14/32, spans to a length of 930 meters. There are currently no scheduled flights to and from Salamo Airport, although guests can still fly to the town via unchartered flights offered by Airlines PNG and several other charter airlines based in Papua New Guinea. Found to the southern end of the village of Salamo is the picturesque town of Esa’Ala. The locals here offer visitors an adventurous day out in the mountains. While in the area, feel free to go bird watching, island hopping, and beach bumming.
What to Do & Area Attractions
The small island of Fergusson currently lacks accommodations for tourists. However, there isa wide array of hotel choices found in the mainland, some of which are the Tawali Resort, the cozy Alotau International Hotel, and the nearby Driftwood Resort. These hotels offer beachfront suites and are only a few minute’s drives from Gurney Airport.
