Portalegre: An Architectural and Cultural Escape Close to Nature
Portalegre, Portugal, is a municipality located in Serra de São Mamede. The region was named after Portus Alacer that translates to a "cheerful port." The region was founded in 1259 and was given as a gift to Afonso of Portugal, the Lord of Portalegre. The region served as the home of the famous Portuguese writer Jose Regio for more than three decades during the early 1920s. His home was turned into a museum and became one of the top local attractions in the region.
