Ofu Airport – OFU
Found about two kilometers from the southeastern side of the village of Ofu on Ofu Island, American Samoa, the Ofu Airport is a public airport which is owned by the Government of American Samoa. It serves as the primary gateway to the island of Ofu. The airport is known internationally by its International Air Transport Association (IATA) location identifier of OFU, its International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) location identifier of NSAS, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) location identifier of Z08.
Best Time to Visit
The airport was initially built back in 1974 on 7.3 hectares of land. In 1986, the only runway in the airfield, which is made of concrete and spans to a little over 600 meters in length and 18 meters in width, was moved to its new location. Ofu Airport handled almost 2,000 aircraft operations by the end of 2004, all of which are air taxi flights. While on the island of Ofu, make sure to visit the National Park of American Samoa, which is a sanctuary of coral reefs, fruit bats, tropical rainforests, and the culture of the Samoans.
What to Do & Area Attractions
There are currently no hotels within the airport itself, although there is a small lodge, which is about a three-minute walk from the airport. The Va'oto Lodge provides its guests with an affordable room and a calming view of the sea. You can also drive to Asaga Inn, a family-run motel east of the airport. The Aga Reef Resort is located in the nearby Lalomanu.
The other airport serving American Samoa is Tau Airport on the island of Tau.
