Mayagüez: The City of Pure Waters
Originally founded as Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, Mayagüez is a city in Puerto Rico that was founded in 1760. Mayagüez, Puerto Rico is the third largest city in the county, and is known for its tuna factories and port, which is why the city is also known as the City of Pure Waters. An earthquake unfortunately hit the city in 1918; the city has since been unstoppable with its development. Just an 11-minute drive away from the city proper is the Eugenio María de Hostos Airport, where tourists can book their flights going to Mayagüez.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Mayagüez would be during the months of December to March; the city is teeming with tourists during January, who take advantage of the wonderful weather. Tourists can also visit during the month of June where the city celebrates the Festival del Mango, where the City of Mango celebrates its beloved fruit.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Plaza Colon is the main plaza of Mayagüez. Plaza Colon commemorates Christopher Columbus and was built during the year that the city was founded. Just a 2-minute walk away from the plaza is the Hotel Colonial, a two-star hotel. Tourists can also visit the Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria, which was first built in 1763. During the 19th century, thousands of black slave children were emancipated and baptized in this cathedral, which became an event known as the Waters of Liberty. The cathedral is also close to the Howard Johnson Downotown Mayaguez. The Mayaguez Zoo is near the Mayaguez Resort & Casino.
