Maringa: Brazil’s Song City
Maringa, Brazil is a municipality in Parana originally established as a planned urban area in 1947. Today, it is a commercial hub thriving on the agricultural industry. It was named after a song of Joubert de Carvalho, entitled “Maria do Inga”. Later on, it was shortened into “Maringa”. As such, it is also dubbed as “Song City”. The nearest airports include Silvio Name Junior Regional Airport (MGF) or Maringa Regional Airport and Gov. Jose Richa Airport or Londrina Airport (LDB).
Best Time to Visit
With a tropical climate, it is ideal to visit Maringa during the months of April through September. The busiest months are usually January, June, and July. Tourists are least likely to visit in October. Every August, the Japanese-Brazilian Festival is held to celebrate the Japanese heritage. The municipality has the country’s third biggest population of Japanese descendants. Meanwhile, every May, the Maringa Film Festival or Fest Cine Maringa is held. There are various categories awarded every year. Parallel events include debates, film workshops, and other shows.
What to Do & Area Attractions
One of the best attractions in the municipality is Catedral Basílica Menor Nossa Senhora da Glória or Cathedral of Maringa, South America’s tallest church. Its design, which boasts with a modernist, conical shape, was inspired by the Soviet sputnik satellites. Another popular attraction nearby is Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral or Londrina Metropolitan Cathedral. Originally, it was built in wood and was inaugurated in 1934. In 1951, a clock tower was added. Some of the most luxurious Maringa hotels are Hotel Astoria, the 4-star Hotel Metropole Maringa, and the Golden Inga Hotel.
