Mataveri International Airport – IPC Mataveri International
The Mataveri International Airport in Hanga Roa, Rapa Nui holds the distinction of being the most remote airport in the world. Westward, the nearest airport is not for another 1,617 miles. While eastward, the nearest airport is 2,336 miles away. The only airline that has scheduled flights to Hanga Roa, Chile is Latam Airlines. Not too far away and located near the airport are the famous Moai statues of the Easter Island.
Best Time to Visit
The IPC Mataveri International was originally designed for use as an abort site for the US Space Shuttle. NASA finished lengthening the runway in 1987 enabling wide-bodied jets to land, boosting the island’s tourism in the process. The runway of the airport starts from the island’s southeast coast and reaches the west coast. Since the runway reaches coast to coast on the island, airline approach and departures are made over the water. Even though it is a remote airport, it still welcomes more than 100,000 tourists in a year, as the airport is the main entry point for travelers wishing to explore the Easter Islands. The airport is also used for travelers continuing their trip to or returning from Papeete, Tahiti.
