Hualien Airport – HUN
The Hualien Airport is the tenth-busiest airport in Taiwan. It is located within a civilian area of a military airbase and serves the township of Xincheng, Hualien County, Taiwan and the nearby towns. The Hualien Airport, with the airport code HUN, was used before as a military gravel airfield. It was in 1962, when authorities opened it both for military and civilian operations. In 2001, it was certified as an international airport serving mostly charter flights to Japan, South Korea, and Macau.These charter flights have been ended. In 2017, the airport has served 235,386 passengers.
Best Time to Visit
The HUN-Hualien Airport had been expanded in preparation for the growing number of international charter flights from 2002 to 2005. There was an increasing frequency of tourism in the city as it is the known gateway to Taroko National Park. In 2004, the new passenger terminal was opened with different feature compare to other two airport terminals in Taiwan as the take-offs and landings can be clearly viewed by aviation enthusiasts. So far, the airport has not gained recognition as an international airport since it lacks appropriate ground services of aircraft maintenance and level of passenger usage.The nearest cities near Hualien airport are, Hualien, Dali and Taichung. They can be easily accessed upon arrival.
