Cutro: The City of Chess
Cutro, Italy is a town in Crotone, known as the “City of Chess”. It became a city in 1575. It is the birthplace of award-winning football player, Vincenzo Iaquinta. It used to be a Magna Graecia Greek colony.
Best Time to Visit
The perfect time to visit Cutro is during the months of March through June and September through December, for the best weather. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of May through July. Tourists are least likely to visit in November.
What to Do & Area Attractions
One of the most famous attractions in the area is Capo Colonna or Capo Colonne or Capo della Colonne. It is a cape from which the ruins of an ancient Greek temple honoring Hera are visible. Its name was derived from the remaining column of said ruins. Tourists should also visit Sila National Park, which was founded in 1997. It is home to one of the most significant, biodiverse areas in the country. Its symbol is a wolf. Another interesting site to visit in the area is Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia or Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria or Palazzo Piacentini. Dating back as early as 1882, it houses archaeological collections from Magna Graecia. The most antique artifacts are choppers or splintered rocks, which date back to 600,000 years ago.
