Charleville-Mezieres: World Capital of Puppetry Arts
Charleville-Mezieres, France is a commune made up of 2 originally separate communities on the opposite banks of the Meuse River, Charleville and Mezieres. The former was established by Charles Gonzaga, duke of Mantua, in the early 17th century. In the mid-19th century, these 2 communities were connected by a suspension bridge. The current commune was founded in 1966. With puppetry playing an important role in its culture, it is known as the “World Capital of Puppetry Arts”.

Tourists are least likely to visit in December. One of the most anticipated events in the area is World Puppet Theatre Festival, which is held biennially every August. It is the world’s biggest gathering of puppeteers. Mainly, it promotes and supports the world of puppetry through the co-production of shows. Established in 1961, it cultivates appreciation for the unique form of art that is puppetry.
