Discovering the Cheerful Colors of Aveiro
Aveiro is a maritime city on the west coast of Portugal that’s crisscrossed with canals cruised by colorful gondola-type boats, which used to be vessels for seaweed harvest. Its dock, on the other side, lies on the older part of the city with its quaint charming Art Nouveau houses in pretty pastel shades. Aveiro has become a popular getaway destination for locals even during off-peak seasons. It is also one of Portugal’s romantic havens.
Best Time to Visit
Ideal weather in Aveiro occurs from months of April to early November and May. These are also the most bustling months for tourism. A hike in prices for Aveiro hotels during these months is predictable so better book early if you’re planning a trip. You may consider visiting in November when the National Geographic Exodus Aveiro Fest, an International Travel and Adventure Photography and Video Festival takes place between end of November and first week of December. There will be fewer tourists at that time as they shun Aveiro at the onset of winter.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Aveiro is home to fine hotels like the stylish Hotel Moliceiro or the Hotel Aveiro Palace with its view of the canals or the modest Residencial Palmeira. Spend a few hours exploring the city beginning with Aveiro Salt Pans, an eco-museum located on one of the canals. Walk the tree-lined Praça da Republica at the heart of the city and get a glimpse of the City Hall and the Misericórdia Church or just sit back and people-watch.
