Altoona: A Land of Fun, Theme Parks and Candy
There are a couple of stories on how Altoona, PA got its name. One explanation claims that Altoona is a Latin word meaning “High”, while another claims that the city’s name was taken from Altona, a seaport in Germany. Whichever is true between these two, the fact remains that Altoona, Pennsylvania is now a treasure with a cheerful downtown, interesting heritage and a city full of candy. Home to the Boyer Candy, “The Mountain City” as most people call Altoona, is also home the “Leap-The-Dips”, the world’s oldest wood roller coaster. Altoona-Blair County Airport is the nearest terminal in the region.
