Wavre: Family-Friendly, French-Speaking City in Belgium
Wavre, Belgium is an enchanting city located in the valley of Dyle. Even though it is in Belgium, majority of the local residents speak French as their first language. The city goes by the nickname “The City of Maca” in reference to the statue of a little boy climbing up the city hall. It is evident in the architecture of the city how the Roman and Medieval period had influenced it. It was also the famous site for the Battle of Wavre, one of Napoleon’s wars and happened on the same day as the Battle of Waterloo.
Best Time to Visit
The only months it is comfortable at Wavre is during the summer months of late May to early September. Otherwise, the city is partly cloudy and chilly. That is why summers tend to be the busiest for the city and Wavre hotels are expensive. But it is during fall or winter when there are lots of festivities happening in the city. For example, the Vintage Music Festival takes place every November.
