Verucchio: The Centre of Malatesta Dynasty
Verucchio, Italy, is an ancient town with a rich history. A commune in the Rimini provinces, it commands and overlooks the valley of the Marecchia River. The birthplace of Malatesta da Verucchio, who founded Romagna’s Malatesta lordship, it’s where the dynasty began. It was then fortified by Malatesta’s successors to defend against Urbino’s Montefeltro. Given its history, Verucchio has many amazing cultural and historical buildings for visitors to see.
Best Time to Visit
Fall is typically the slowest season for tourism in Verucchio due to the snow and rains, although, for the most part, it remains comfortable. Since fewer people come to the city, Verucchio hotels are affordably priced. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit, and since it’s also a fairly slow season, the hotel rates cost a bit less. The most hectic months are December to February (winter), so it might be difficult to book a room around this time.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Verucchio has many gems when it comes to historical buildings and beautiful accommodations. For one, there is Le Case Antiche - Il Casaledell'Arte, located near Rimini and provides stunning sights of San Marino. The hotel is also close to the cultural highlights Button Museum and Verucchio Archaeological Museum. Oste del Castello Wellness & Bike Hotel is more than just a hotel and full-service spa, but an important cultural building that took a lot of time to restore. Visitors cannot forget to visit Rocca del Sasso, the Malatestian castle. It is a huge medieval complex that includes various buildings built from the 12thto 16th centuries.
