Teluk Intan – Small Town with Big City Feels
Teluk Intan is the largest town and capital of the Hilir Perak district in Malaysia. It was once known as Teluk Anson which translates to Anson Bay, but is now named Teluk Intan or Diamond Bay. The town used to be the place where Perak rulers held court. Today, Teluk Intan has grown with the times. Travelers will delight in knowing that it has all features of a modern city complete with shopping malls and movie theaters. Yet, it still retains its small town charm and rich history. Teluk Intan, Malaysia can be reached through the nearest airport, Sultan Azlan Shah Airport (IPH) which is approximately an hour and 28 minutes away.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Teluk Intan is from early months June to mid-September. Travelers visiting the town at this time will be able to stroll through the city and visit its attractions without fear of rain or too much heat. Months from late December to mid-March is also a good time to visit the town. A visit to the town during the Chitra Pournami festival held every first month of the Tamil calendar is also an interesting time to visit, but take note that the town can get very busy.
What to Do & Area Attractions
One of the most famous tourist attractions in Teluk Intan is the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan. It used to be a Japanese watchtower during the Second World War. Another popular attraction is the Batu Tenggek or Sitting Boulder which is a war memorial commemorating the fallen soliders during the First and Second World War. Lastly, visit The Ruin of Raja Muda’s Palace, although permission must first be granted as it is now the property of the Sultan of Perak. Stay in a hotel located close to these attractions such as the Angsoka Hotel, which is only a 5-minute drive away from the Leaning Tower and a 3-minute walk to the Rapid Mall. Also another interesting place to stay is the Yew Boutique Hotel, with rooms that are uniquely decorated from one another. Tourists will be relieved to know that the staff here are fluent in English.
