Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport - SDF
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is a public airport that serves and is located just 10 minutes from downtown Louisville, Kentucky. It was originally named Standiford Field, which is where the airport code SDF is derived from. The name change was voted on by the Regional Airport Authority in 2019, and is in honor of one of Louisville’s pride, the legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali. Covering a land area of 1,500 acres, it features 3 runways, and a passenger terminal with 24 boarding gates. This international airport is also the base of UPS’ worldwide hub, Worldport.
Best Time to Visit
Built in 1941 by the Army Corps of Engineers, the airport has no regularly scheduled passenger flights for international destinations, although it does offer flight services to 19 of the top 20 domestic destinations in the region. On the other hand, it is the third busiest airport in the United States - and seventh in the world - when it comes to cargo traffic. In 2018, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport handled over 2.8 million tons of cargo, and 3.8 million passengers. Travelers flying in to this airport can explore other cities of Jefferson County, including Barbourmeade and St. Matthews, Kentucky.
