Samarkand: A Pride of Central Asia
Considered as one of Central Asia’s oldest, continuously inhabited cities, Samarkand, Uzbekistan is classified into 2 parts-old city and new city. The old city houses historical monuments, old private residences, shops, among others. Best Time to Visit
It is highly recommended to visit Samarkand anytime during the months of April through June and August through October. The city has the best weather during these periods. The busiest months in terms of tourist influx are usually April, February, and July. People are least likely to visit in September. In August, locals celebrate Sharq Taronalari. Considered as one of the most anticipated events in Uzbekistan, it is a huge, international, ethnic music festival held biennially (odd years).
What to Do & Area Attractions
Ulugh Beg Observatory is a must-see tourist destination in Samarkand. Ulugh Beg, a Timurid astronomer, built it in the early 15th century. A few decades later, it was destroyed; but it was unearthed again in 1908. The museum features several artifacts as well as a miniature reconstruction of Ulugh Beg Observatory. You may want to tour the Afrasiyab, an ancient site next to Afrasiab Museum of Samarkand and near Bibi Khanum Mosque.
