Its name can be traced back to Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza, who formerly called the harbor of the city as Puerto de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles (Port of Our Lady of the Angels) in the 1790s. English speaking settlers shortened it to what is now known as Port Angeles Harbor during the mid-19th century.
