Marinha Grande: A City Within The Pines
Marinha Grande, Portugal is a municipality located in the Leiria District in the center of the 700-year old Leiria Pine Forest. The forest was first planted in the 13th century and was expanded to serve as a barrier from the sands and as a supply for timber. Marinha Grande's economy also improved during the height of its glass manufacturing using the wood from the forest as fuel for the factories. By the year 1826, the factory was given to the state and became one of the country's main producers of traditionally made fine crystals. Aside from its commercial establishments, the municipality is surrounded by wonderful beaches and natural environments, as well as historical landmarks.
