Hays: Enjoying Western Kansas’ Commercial Maverick
Originally named Fort Hays, KS after Alexander Hays, a general from the Civil War became Hays City in 1866. Once considered as a “Boot Hill” and a tough region who sported around 37 liquor establishments during its early days, it has now become a destination for fun, business and entertainment. The wild west was indeed very wild in Hays, Kansas during its early days with a total of 79 outlaws dying in the region and murders in every corner of the city. All of that is now in the past and can be reminisced in the walls and artifacts featured in museums and heritage sites in the region. The city is serviced by the HYS-Hays Regional Airport.
