Its airport code, CWL, stands for Cardiff and Wales. New Rhoose Airport was the name of the airport starting in 1952. It was handling commercial flights during that time. In 1995, the airport was privatized, and it had already Cardiff International Airport as its name. In 2009, the name was changed to Cardiff Airport, and in 2013, the airport was bought back by Welsh Government. As of 2018, the airport has handled 1.581 million passengers.
