Colonia del Sacramento: Vintage Charms of a Historic Town
The city of Colonia del Sacramento in southwestern Uruguay is a renowned site for its historic quarter with cobblestoned streets lined with buildings from a bygone era. Perched on the east bank of the Río de la Plata it is only 50kilometers from Buenos Aires by ferry drawing thousands of visitors from its neighbor, Argentina. Originally founded by the Portuguese in the 1600s, the city is presently considered a melting pot.
Best Time to Visit
Weekends during the summer months of December to March prove to be difficult in finding lodgings and rates rise but it is the best time to visit Colonia del Sacramento. This is the busiest time of year in town as a bevy of visitors arrive from across the country and Buenos Aires. The shoulder months of April-June and October-November are the next best options when the crowds have thinned out and Colonia del Sacramento hotel rates have stabilized. The International Festival of Colonia is another reason to come to town to experience world-renowned arts and music for 5 days in November.
