CNM Airport first began as Carlsbad Army Airfield in 1942. At the end of the 2nd World War, the airfield was inactivated and eventually became a civil airport. Several airlines have served the airport over the years, the first being Continental Airlines back in 1940. Other airlines include Trans-Texas Airways, Air Midwest, Trans Colorado Airlines, Big Sky Airlines, and Boutique Air starting from 2015 until the present day. The airport covers a land area of 1,980 acres and sits on an elevation of 3,295 feet above mean sea level. The airport features 4 runways with asphalted surfaces. As of July 2009, the airport had a total of 6,682 aircraft operations, averaging 18 per day. Neighboring cities such as Artesia and Whites City, aside from Carlsbad, also make use of Cavern City Air Terminal for air travel.
