The name of Chehalis, a city in Lewis County is the name of the language of the Chehalis people. These natives are Salishan Indians that lived in the Chehalis river valley before settlement in the region. Chehalis became the county seat of Lewis County when Claquato, the original county seat was siderailed during the construction of the railroad tracks in 1873. Settlement began to flourish in Chehalis, WA and Claquato, the original county seat became a historical landmark instead. Starbucks’ former CEO Orin Smith was from Chehalis.
