Best Time to Visit
The history of Bembridge or BBP Airport started as early as 1920. It opened on land that was owned by Bembridge Farm. The airfield became licensed in 1921 and was operational by 1933 with only three grass airstrips, the longest being at 2,340 feet. It was Spartan Airlines that built a terminal facility in 1934 and was one of the first airlines to offer passenger services. The creation of a 1000 feet runway ensued in 1980 complete with an all-weather strip. Bembridge Airport Ltd took over operational control in 2010. The airport lost its license under the CAA in January 2011 due to leasing issues and was temporarily closed. The runway of the airport is open again but only for PPR operations. Visitors from nearby cities such as Southampton and Winsor often land in Bembridge Airport when visiting the Isle of Wright.
